Inauguration of High Dependency Unit
The hospital today officially inaugurated its High Dependency Unit. The 12 bedded state-of-the-art unit was inaugurated at a ceremony held today at the hospital. The Unit was opened by Ms Aneesa Ahmed, a nurse by profession and also a former health minister who has contributed immensely to the Maldives health sector.
The Chief Guest after opening the Unit has a tour of the premise. Later she spoke at the function and said that she was very impressed with the services available through the Unit. She also said that the Unit is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and is well designed to address care that is focussed to the patient. Also, in her speech she noted that the staff in the unit were highly specialized and trained for the purpose. In addition, she indicated that the public should accept these developments and be proud of the achievments that the health sector is making. Specially she alluded to the fact taht these services are in some aspects better than tose that may be available in nearby coutries. Furthermore, Ms Aneesa said that the instutiton should put more efforts to educate the public on such services and their availablity and also the public should take a responsibility to learn and understand these complex services available to them.
The Managing Director of the Hospital, Mr Ahmed Afaal, in his speech described the need for such a Unit. He said that care is required at many levels in any hospital. Hence, with the complexity of surgeries that are undertaken at the hospital and also with the disease profile of the patients and depending on its severity, many people do not need ICU care directly but need an intermediate care facility before they can be admitted to a general ward or room setting.
The HDU opened today is the largest of its kind in the Maldives to date. With 12 beds with central wireless monitoring including video monitoring, will cater for the need of many patients who require such inteventions. The Unit also has to beds that are used for patients who require some isolations depending on their conditions.
The ceremony was concluded with a video highlighting the services of the HDU.
